Overview
Lumpy, bumpy, twisted stick (no photo can do it justice).
Historically: walking sticks were symbols of the questing traveler and the journeying pilgrim. In illustrations of the birth of Christ, the three wise men from afar are often depicted with such a stick in the left hand, their gift in the right. Illustrations of saintly travelers like St. Christopher also show them with a traveling walking stick. In myth and tale: the ragged traveler with the walking stick may actual be a powerful mage or even a god. Odin, the ruler of all pagan Norse gods was said to walk the earth in human form as a one-eyed beggar with a walking stick; he would test people's charity towards the poor and sickly by how they treated him as a human beggar. Even in tales, travelers with long hard journeys, like Dick Whittington and more recently Frodo and Sam (J.R.Tolkien's fairytale questing travelers) have had traveling walking sticks to lean on.
